Mike throws the ball and I watch to see where it floats down the river and retrieve it. I could do this all day!

I realize that I haven’t reported on my humans for quite a while. It has been so hot this summer that we have been coming to the river every day to cool off. I love swimming in the cool water.

Mike did a short demonstration for them, he showed them how he throws a pot, trims a pot and applies a handle. The girls looked like they enjoyed the demonstration, we hope they did.

THE GREAT KILN SLIDE

We are getting ready to go to Dillsboro, NC to do the Western North Carolina Pottery Festival, November 7th. Mike fired the kiln yesterday. This morning around 6:30, he walked into the house and said: “Karen, we have a big problem.”
Some time during the firing (we think it was at the end) one of the pieces of kiln furniture broke and the front row of shelves fell forward against the kiln door. Everytime we opened the door just a crack, the shelves came with it. This was a disaster. Not only would we lose $5000, worth of pottery, we would also lose all of our kiln shelves. Mike finally decided to run straps over the top of the kiln between the shelves and the door and fasten them to the bottom of the kiln. By this time we were aided by Pam Duncan, Trina Feldhake and Laura Davis (she came with long raku tongs).
Laura climed onto the top of the kiln, grabbed a shelf and hung on while Mike pulled the door open. The straps and Laura held them in place. Mike pulled the pots out and handed them to Trina, Pam and me. We didn’t break any pots or shelves and only lost 12 pieces.
A HUGE THANKS TO PAM, TRINA AND LAURA, YOU SAVED US.

Mike and Karen will be leaving me with my buddies, Jackson, Emma and Rosie, for the weekend so they can travel to Pendleton, SC to participate in the Historic Pendleton Spring Jubilee. They say its a really good show in a beautiful location, Karen really likes it that Pendleton has a Scottish sister city so there will be a lot a bagpipe music. If you want to learn more about the show go to:
www.pendletondistrict.org/jubilee
Until the next post...
Willy
